Academy and Theatre Company
An Important message from members of our Performing Arts Academy
During Lockdown our Performing Arts Academy has continued to meet and rehearse together online. The Performing Arts play a key role in supporting mental health and wellbeing. This amazing version of 'You Will Be Found' was recorded by some of our Academy members; we are so proud of them. Their message to everyone out there - 'You are not alone'.
A Place For Us runs a dynamic Performing Arts Academy and a critically acclaimed Theatre Company. We believe that inspiring, challenging and training the next generation of actors/musicians is crucial. Many of our past students are now professionals and many more extend their training in to further and higher education in the Performing and Creative Arts.
We support young talent at all levels, from those just starting on their journey to those entering the profession. We are proud to have been nominated as finalists in the 'Excellence in Music Theatre' category of the 'Music & Drama Education Awards in 2020 and 2021.
Whatever the future holds getting involved in the Performing Arts will have a lifelong benefit. Many employers look for the skills that performers have: Self-confidence, presentational skills, team work, flexibility, creative thinking resilience and self-discipline to name but a few.

West Side Story - Our Next Big Adventure: 28th - 30th October 2021
Our biggest show to date is planned for October 2021 – a production of West Side Story for our young company of performers aged 12-21, at The Brindley Theatre, Runcorn. After rigorous auditions, casting is finalised, and rehearsals have begun, led by a professional director, musical director, choreographer and accompanied by a 19 piece professional orchestra.
Alongside the show, a theme related outreach programme named ’Wish it was Yesterday’ (a line from WSS, when a gang member realises the magnitude of the crime they have committed) is due to be delivered in local schools and youth centres. The workshops and discussions are centred around the subjects of violent gang crime and the effects on families and communities.
From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents' book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are widely regarded as among the best ever written. The world's greatest love story takes to the streets in this
landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre's finest accomplishments. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
Tickets for West Side Story are on sale NOW from The Brindley Box Office. Click HERE to book tickets
Back in 2017 whilst running the Performing Arts Academy (Formerly The Heath Perform/LIPA 4:19), we ‘dreamed a dream’ to start a Theatre Company arm of our organisation for young people age 12 - 21. We embarked on our ambitious inaugural production of Les Miserables to be staged at the Epstein Theatre , Liverpool, accompanied by a full professional orchestra. After months of unbelievable hard work, collaboration, enthusiasm and talent, in Nov 2017, the show achieved huge success both critically and artistically. Since that initial show, the theatre company has gone from strength to strength, running alongside but independently of the performing arts academy. Productions in recent years have been the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar and the classic timeless Oliver! Both of which attained extraordinary production values akin to professional shows. Click on the posters below for rehearsal and production photos/videos and full reviews.
‘…an outstanding production, filled with strong conviction, passion and never ending talent’
‘The cast is excellent and I predict great futures in the theatre industry for many of the performers in the show’

Converting to a Community Interest Company has enabled us to continue our work with music and theatre to inspire and create high quality, inclusive, cultural experiences that raises aspiration and have a positive impact on the cultural, social and economic landscape of the local community of Halton, Merseyside and beyond.
Since the transition to A Place for Us, we are delighted to have been nominated for the second time in 2021 (previously in 2020 under previous name) for the national MDE Award as a finalist in the ‘Excellence in Musical Theatre’ category. We are currently mid rehearsals for our largest scale show yet – a 19 piece professionally orchestrated production of ‘West Side Story’, hailed as the ‘most highly acclaimed musical of all time’. Alongside the production we are running a drama community project with young people entitled’ Wish It was Yesterday’ tackling the themes of the show of gang violence and its effects on families & communities.
We have had our challenges this year, with The Covid 19 pandemic setting our show dates back twice, and a recast of roles due to some of our young people moving around the UK in their education careers. But we are nothing if not resilient. New opportunities have opened up for young performers & technicians to apply to us get involved. The Theatre Company is free for young people to join and take part, but members are expected to take on some fundraising roles to contribute to the production costs. We are looking forward to developing the company and producing more world class theatre and opportunities. We can’t wait to get back to working in a theatre soon. Watch this space and Leave a Light On…The show MUST Go On!
